About The Art
In 1941 at the age of 75, the great painter, Henri Matisse, was recovering from several illnesses and surgeries. During this time he developed the art of the cut-out which you will see throughout the website.
By maneuvering scissors through prepared sheets of colored paper, he began a new phase of his artistic career. Even though he was often confined to his wheelchair or bed he remained passionate, scissors ready for the inspiration to carve out color and shape together.
Matisse said, "Only what I created after the illness constitutes my real self: free, liberated."
Over the years I have developed an increased appreciation for the beauty, liveliness, rhythm and flow, playfulness and maturity of his cut out art form. Only recently did it occur to me that this almost perfectly captures the experience of working with individuals and couples in psychotherapy.
I hope you enjoy and are inspired by the improvisational, lovely and forceful genius of Matisse as you explore the website.
